Let’s talk about web3 gaming

We consider Web3 gaming as the next generation of storytelling. Blockchain technology is still a fledgling technology, and all endeavors in it as well. The ability to tell a story using the platform we love with the technology we helped develop excites us about this game.

Let’s examine the Web3 gaming landscape through our lens. Some things we approve of and some we’d like to change. During the development of TotemParadox, we try to follow the principles outlined here, and we hope this blog post gives you some insight into what to expect from it.

Play to Earn mechanic

One of the worst possible gaming mechanics in Web3, in our opinion, is Play to Earn. We get it… It is nice to be compensated for the effort you put into something that you spend your time on. But if the game is all about earning, it results in two negative consequences.

The first one is that the games have no soul; they revolve solely around mundane actions that, in turn, reward you with small earnings. The experience that you should get from enjoying the lore and playing the game, which should feel rewarding, gets replaced by the minimal rewards in the form of earning.

The second one is that the initial fun of playing such a game becomes a chore as you are forced to execute repetitive tasks for constant return.

We feel that gaming should be fun and rewarding for the challenges you overcome and the journey you experience.

Pay to Win mechanic

Gaming assets as NFTs can be abused so that a player can buy a high-level or a high-rarity NFT and be more powerful than dedicated players who put their work into attaining their level of abilities and gear. History has shown that any game allowing for such abuse had a relatively short lifespan.

We wish for TotemParadox to be a fun and engaging gaming experience. Our design is based on a two-tiered NFT experience. One is your character NFT, which is non-transferable. The skills and experience you gain through your journey as a Totem bearer are yours and yours alone. The second one is the Totems themselves. You will be able to sell the Totems that you develop and craft if you wish so. This will allow for a healthy game economy.

Story-first design

We remember the stories we experience, so this is something we intend to put a lot of focus on. Every Totem bearer will have their own Journal to keep track of all of the stories they encounter along the way. Only by remembering our steps can we truly understand the world of TotemParadox.

Community fostering

A journey through the post-apocalyptic world should not be a lonely one. You can choose to do it alone, but we want to give you the ability to build friendships and communities that enrich your experience. We are excited to show you how we plan to do this sometime in the future.

It is always exciting to hear what you have to say. Follow us on Twitter @TotemParadox, and let us know what you think!
